Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 2023-2024

Have a look at the wonderful things Year 1 have been doing this year!

As we continue to settle into our classrooms and explore our environment.  We have been working hard to complete classroom challenges take a look at our photos!

In DT we have been learning about leavers.  We created our own catapult using a spoon, sticks and pens.  We discussed the load being the spoon and the pens being the fulcrum.  We played flying pompoms to test them out.

In English we have been looking at poems and rhyming words, continuing to focus on ensuring we are using finger spaces, capital and letters and full stops correctly.

We took part in our first Commando Jos lesson where the children have been working in pairs to guide their partners round the obstacle course, encouraging our team work and our communication skills.

We were very lucky to take part in a visit from the National highway where we got to learn about road safety and how their vehicles are used on the roads.  We also celebrated Diwali, learning more about the celebration and creating our own Rangoli patterns.

In Geography this week we have continued our journey around the UK and began looking at Scotland.  We discussed the difference between landmarks we could see in Scotland and those in our local area of Walsall.  We then created a travel guide for Scotland focusing on the landmarks of Ben Nevis and Seilebost beach.

In English we are basing our learning on our new text Room on the broom.  We have been learning what a question mark is and how they can be used in our sentences by creating and recording our own questions for the witch from the story.  We have also created our own Talk for Write map as a class which we practice every day with actions, focusing on the genre of a diary.

Our computer skills continue to improve as we develop our mouse skills.  This week we designed our own broom for the witch!

The children have been exploring 3D shapes and their features by looking at the faces, edges and corners, learning a new term, vertices to describe the corners of a shape.  We are becoming much more confident naming 3D shapes.

In our creative curriculum afternoons, we have been creating silhouettes of our faces during Art as we focus on the French artist Augustin Edouart.  In DT we received a very exciting letter from Santa asking us to make him and his helpers a healthy snack.  We set to work designing and preparing a flapjack, sticking to the design brief to ensure it was healthy, contained two toppings and would be appealing to Santa, his reindeers or the Elves.
