RE

At Delves Infant School, our Religious Education curriculum uses and adapts the Walsall SACRE Agreed Syllabus for RE.

RE makes a major contribution to pupils’ awareness, appreciation and exploration of morality and values, including the fundamental British Values. This syllabus shows teachers how to connect RE in appropriate and suitable ways to the exploration of values and of opportunities for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Religious Education

Intent

At Delves Infant and Nursery School we want our children to be thoughtful members of our community that are equipped with the knowledge that enables them to make informed life choices about how they wish to live their lives and have a deeper knowledge of the faiths and beliefs of others they meet on their journey.. Children will encounter experiences that will contribute to their awareness, appreciation and exploration of the British Values, whilst also allowing them to understand a range of religions and world views.

Parental right of withdrawal from RE

The right of withdrawal was first granted in 1944 when curricular RE was called ‘religious instruction’ and carried with it connotations of induction into the Christian faith. RE is very different now – open, broad, exploring a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, never coercive. However, in the UK, parents still have the right to withdraw their children from RE on the grounds that they wish to provide their own RE (School Standards and Framework Act 1998 S71). This will be the parents’ responsibility.

Should you wish to discuss withdrawing your child from RE at Delves Infant School, please contact Mrs Reilly via the school email address at postbox@delvesinfantschool.co.uk.
